They have a number of very important functions the first of which is to stop us collapsing sideways when we are on one foot.
Also, all muscles work in pairs. One contracts while the other relaxes. When we sit all day, the illiopsoas muscle or hip flexor is being constantly 'excited' by the brain. Its partner is the glute medius muscle which in turn is being constantly 'relaxed' by the brain.
One becomes super tight (and this muscle connects to the vertebrae and disc of the lower back) and the other loose and weak. When this bum muscles loses its tug of war with the hip flexor the result is a saggy bum and a hip joint on its way to arthritis.
Try this exercise following the instructions carefully.
